Clouded by Envy - Book Breakdown

Brenik has always been envious of his twin sister, Bray. Growing up as fairy-like creatures, known as bats, everything came easier to Bray. While Brenik spent his time in her shadows, never feeling he was enough. After escaping their world of Laith, and living on Earth for ten years, Brenik attempts to strike a deal with the Stone of Desire to become human. Though true humanity is not an option, he will accept the curse that will alter him to get as close as he can.

Living in a tree trunk for the past year hasn’t been easy for Bray, more so after her brother disappears again. When a human boy and his brother, Wes, find her, a new friendship is struck. Through Wes, Bray learns there can be more to life than waiting within a tree. But worrying over where Brenik has vanished to always remains in the back of her mind.

When Bray reunites with Brenik, she realizes she must help him break the curse after she discovers the need for blood is beginning to overpower him. The curse not only damages those who get close to Brenik, but it could also destroy whatever is blooming between Bray and Wes.

Book Breakdown

*I was given this title in exchange for an honest review*

Brenik and Bray are twins from a world not quite like ours. They're not human either, related closely to bats. They are forced to leave their home and when Bray gets a gift from the Stone of Desire, it only makes Brenik even more jealous of his older twin sister. Deciding he can't take it anymore, he strikes a deal with the stone but it's not quite what he hoped it to be, he ends up murdering people. Can Bray save him or is he beyond the point of no return?

VAMPIRES!!!!! I said it, vampires. This book has vampires! Which thrilled my little vampire obsessed heart so much. That alone was enough to make me love this, well not really but it gets serious bonus points! The writing is great, fast-paced, not a single dull moment, every scene drives the plot forward quickly. It just hooks you so you don't want to put down the book. You have to keep going to the very end.

I don't think I've ever voiced this before but I'm not the biggest fan of reading about children because most of the time they fall flat to me... I don't know really how to describe it. BUT I loved Luca! He was so adorable. Honestly, all the characters were very well written, even the few that we only see for a few scenes. My favorite was Luca though, not gonna lie. There's even romance in this book and it's explicit, I mean the book is NA so...

Side note: I had no idea this was set in the '90s! It was so nice to step back into a time before cell phones controlled the masses and social media became the God everyone worshiped. I want to see more books set in this time frame.

My only complaint, I wanted more. This was on the shorter side and I found myself sitting it down because I didn't want it to end. Though that ending! I mean, can I get the sequel now... please? Bottom line, a great fast-paced novel that will suck you in and leave you wanting more.

Simon - The Mortal Instruments
Hear me out, I mean, in the first few novels, even though he's not, he feels like the comic relief. He did to me at least. I know he gets better as the series as it goes but this is just my opinion.

Kaien (Yuki's father) - Vampire Knight
For the most part, he's a total goofball! Though when it comes time to fight, he's not scared to be on the front line to protect those he loves.

Discover what makes you shine from the inside-out, even in the face of difficult life challenges. Through engaging exercises and spiritual techniques, this fun, practical book helps you live your most amazing life.

Book Breakdown

I love Unicorns. Like I really love them. I've got plushies, stickers, knick knacks and much more. So when I saw this book on NetGalley, I just had to ask for it. I was expecting this book to be much different than it was. I was thinking it would be more along the lines of the book Unicorns The Myths, Legends, & Lore by Skye Alexander with history, cultural differences, you know, that kind of stuff but this was more about using the Unicorn as a type of magic... like imagination, finding beauty in things, and it even talks about the chakras.

It's a very informative little book, well written and it's small enough that you could take it on the go. I just feel a bit... mislead? Again, not a bad book, it's great! I loved the exercise with the zipper for your third eye! That's going to come in handy for me fore sure!

I just felt like this book was going to be something much different. If you go into this knowing what you're getting, you'll love it. Simple as that.

July Warp Up!

Wow, July just flew by! But I'm also dreading back to school time so... that makes it seem like it's just looming ever closer. I only read 12 books this month. I've really been slowing down this year, I'm not going to crack 200 books like I normally do. But it's the quality of the books not the quantity.

With that said, let's just jump into it shall we butterflies?

If you want to read my review for any of these titles, just click HERE.

Paranormal Romance

(Review Coming Next Month)

I'd never even heard of this book until I came across Passonflix, I watched the movie first, then read the book and now I'm in love. It's a cute southern romance and I want more of these. I love southern romances but most deal with cowboys. That's not my cup of tea. So to get one like this makes my little southern heart so happy.

It's well written, funny at times and moves at a great pace. Never a dull moment. I mean, it's enemies to lovers! What's not to love?!

If you've read the book then you HAVE to watch the movie on Passonflix, it's worth it.

Pagan/New Age

(Review Coming Next Week!)

This is not what I was hoping for at all. It's Wiccan but with a slight Norse twist. Not the Norse tradition at all. If you're into Norse Wicca then this is for you, otherwise.... stay away.

Well that wraps this up! What was your favorite read last month? Let me know below! Have a great day and happy reading little butterflies!

A Beginners Guide to Jennnifer L Armentrout

So you've heard of Jennifer L Armentrout or you've read one of her books but now where do you go? She's written so many freaking books, where do you start? Well my dear, don't worry, I'm here to guide you through the wonderful world of JLA.

As we go through her books, I will leave a * by the title of the books I fully recommend and love to pieces.

Let's start off with the standalone novels, shall we?

If There's No Tomorrow
A single choice can change everything.

Lena Wise is always looking forward to tomorrow, especially at the start of her senior year. She’s ready to pack in as much friend time as possible, to finish college applications, and to maybe let her childhood best friend Sebastian know how she really feels about him. For Lena, the upcoming year is going to be epic—one of opportunities and chances.

Until one choice, one moment, destroys everything.

Don't Look Back
Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all - popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend.

Dying sucks
...and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand.

After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

*The Problem with Forever*
A story about friendship, survival, and finding your voice.

Growing up, Mallory Dodge learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it's been four years since her nightmare ended, she's beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime. Now, after years of homeschooling, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at a public high school. But she never imagined she'd run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn't seen since childhood, on her very first day.

It doesn't take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet soon it becomes apparent that she's not the only one grappling with lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider's life spiral out of control, Mallory must make a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants and the truths that need to be heard.

Till Death
It’s been ten years since Sasha Keaton left her West Virginia hometown . . . since she escaped the twisted serial killer known as the Groom. Returning to help run her family inn means being whole again, except for one missing piece. The piece that falls into place when Sasha’s threatened—and FBI agent Cole Landis vows to protect her the way he couldn’t a decade ago.

The Dead List
It's Ella's senior year of high school and she and her best friend Linds plan to make it the best year ever. At Brock Cochran's end of summer pool party, the girls vow to have as much fun as possible before they head off to different colleges next fall. But when Ella is mysteriously attacked on her way home from the party, everything changes. Ella's carefree senior year plans disintegrate as she finds herself at the center of an attempted murder investigation...

Now, she writes a lot of series. Which I happen to like a lot more than her standalone novels. In fact, I like all but one of the series I've read by JLA.

*Obsidian* (Lux #1)
My most reread book ever.
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

*Half-Blood* (Covenant #1)
Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is.

The Return (Titan #1)
It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Book 1 in the new adult paranormal TITAN series, spin-off to the best selling COVENANT series, which is listed right above this one.

Don't want to invest in a long series? That's totally fine! Let's talk about trilogies instead.

*White Hot Kiss* (The Dark Elements #1)
Layla just wants to be normal--fit in at school, go out on real dates and do other typical teenager things. Trouble is, Layla is anything but normal and her longtime crush, Zayne, treats her like a little sister. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities that no one else possesses. And even though Zayne is a Warden, part of the race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe, Layla's kiss will kill anything with a soul--including him.

Enter Roth--a smart-mouthed demon who claims to know her deepest, most dangerous secrets. Though Layla knows she should stay away, it's tough when that whole soul thing isn't an issue. Trusting Roth could brand her a traitor to the Warden family that raised her and destroy her relationship with Zayne. But with a violent demon uprising looming in the distance, kissing the enemy suddenly pales in comparison to the end of the world.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Moonlight Sins
Julia Hughes has always played it safe until she learned a very painful lesson. Now Julia’s starting over with a job in the Louisiana bayou—and a scorching encounter with a stranger, only to discover he’s Lucian de Vincent... her new employer. The de Vincent brothers share a massive fortune and a dark reputation. Julia cares for their troubled sister, but a menacing presence in the mansion—and the ever-present temptation of Lucian—prove dangerously distracting.

JLA has been continuing two of her most popular series and while I'm getting ready to mention them, I think you should read the original ones first. Just my two sense.

The Darkest Star
Origin Series (Continues the Lux series)
When seventeen-year-old Evie Dasher is caught up in a raid at a notorious club known as one of the few places where humans and the surviving Luxen can mingle freely, she meets Luc, an unnaturally beautiful guy she initially assumes is a Luxen...but he is in fact something much more powerful. Her growing attraction for Luc will lead her deeper and deeper into a world she'd only heard about, a world where everything she thought she knew will be turned on its head...

Storm and Fury
The Harbinger #1 (Continues The Dark Elements)
Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.

There is a standalone that is an adult spin off of the Lux series. It's worth a mention!

He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

There's also a new adult duology!

or twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Well, I guess I will wrap this up here. I hope you've found something new to read and enjoy yourself. I love this author to pisces and will read just about everything she puts out.

As always little butterflies, have a great day and happy reading!

Now this is one I read before I started blogging so I don't remember a whole lot. I do know it's about vampires which already makes it awesome. Then I can't remember if the MC is full Asian or mixed but it's one of those. Also the author is a POC. She's the same one who wrote The Iron Fey series. I'm due a reread of this awesome series, that's all I know.

The Identity Crisis Book Tag

The Identity Crisis Book Tag was created by Loretta @ Laughing Listener and it features a lot of bookish personality quizzes, which I thought was pretty cool. I've seen this floating around a few blogs and decided that I wanted to join in on the fun and do the quizzes too! So let's jump into it.

Loretta's Rules!

1) Take all the quizzes down below and record your answers somehow.

3) Use this post to give credit to the creator Loretta @ The Laughing Listener or tag her on twitter @LaughnListener

4) Tag some friends to spread the fun!

She may not have a crown on her head (yet?), but Evangeline is already our Queen! She's fierce. Unstoppable. Cunning. Sassy. She has mastered the unique talent of complimenting and insulting someone all in the same sentence. We could go on and on, but basically we bow down to your greatness!

Clary Fairchild & Cristina Rosales!
Sure, sometimes you act without thinking, but you're determined to do what you believe in and you're often coming from the right place. Try to keep your faith in the world around you—your ability to find the beautiful in the ordinary is a gift!

You may come off as stand-offish at first, but once a new friend earns your loyalty, they have it for life. Not without good reason. You've been through your fair share of struggles and are careful to protect yourself from more.

Finnick Odair!
Handsome and charming, of course you're Mr. Popular. You've worked hard to get where you've got to and you're not letting anyone take it away from you. People may mistrust you sometimes but you know you'll prove them wrong. Everyone benefits from having you around.

Draco Malfoy
You love the sound of your own voice. You’re ambitious and seek material comfort. Deep, deep, deeeep down you’re not as much of an asshole as people think.

Ianthe, High Priestess
Power is what you crave most in the world, and you don’t care how you get it. You’ll manipulate, cheat, and sleep your way to the top, and then enjoy every minute you spend seated on your cozy throne without a twinge of regret or conscious. Most likely a sociopath.

Wow.... why do I keep getting such bad ones? Most likely a sociopath?! Geez.

Blue Sargent
You are outspoken, and walk to the beat of your own drum. You've always been different, and take pride in your individualistic nature. Although you try to maintain a rebellious streak, you are consistently told that you are sensible. Remember, don't kiss any strange boys!

Jessica Stanley
The friend that everyone needs in their life, you must be Jessica! Sure, humans might not get to have as much fun as vampires, but you'll show 'em how it's done. You're ever so curious, ever so friendly, and a little bit crazy — who wouldn't want you as a BFF?

You are strong and once you make a decision, you won't back down. Your resilience is both admirable and terrifying at the same time.

So I've never read this series so let me know if Jude is a good or bad character.

A Lunar shell confined to a satellite to aid Queen Levana with hacking and surveillance of Earthen countries. She is a petite girl with very long honey blonde hair, a heart-shaped face, and freckles. She has a very overactive imagination, and nervous around people due to her lack of social interaction growing up.

We've come to the end butterflies and that's all she wrote. I'm not going to tag anyone because I've seen this everywhere and have no idea who has done it or not. If you want to do it then I tag you! Have fun and hopefully you get better answers than me haha. Have a wonderful day and happy reading!
