Devil in Spring (The Ravenels) - Book Breakdown

An eccentric wallflower…

Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she’s ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

A cynical rake…

After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught-by a rebellious girl who couldn’t be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He’ll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil’s own bargain.

A perilous plot…

After succumbing to Gabriel’s skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy—and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil’s bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven...

Book Breakdown

This was one of the most anticipated books in this series for many people because everyone loved the unique Pandora. I am not one of those. I never really cared for Pandora and how she doesn’t care about the rules or anything that doesn’t excite her.

Pandora would rather crate her board game than dance at balls and try to catch a man. Don’t blame her there! She knows that if she were to marry, she’d lose everything to her husband because the rules back then sucked!!! She can’t dance because of her abusive father, so lots of men overlook her, anyway.

Trying to help a friend, she gets caught with Gabriel and it will force them to marry. Devon tells her that would never happen unless she wanted to marry the rake. Pandora seems fine with that answer and doesn’t plan to marry the rake at all! Even though it would cast her twin sister into ruin. Selfish.

She’s just too na├»ve for my personal tastes. She let herself be lured into helping her friend find a missing piece of jewelry without even registering why the girl lost it in the first place.

Gabriel makes no sense to me. He had been avoiding marriage for years, like it’s the plague, but when Pandora comes around, instantly he seems on board with marrying her.

The writing is great as usual; I laughed at parts and smiled at others, but honestly, I’m glad to be done with this one. Just not my cup of tea.

Marrying Winterborne (The Ravenels) - Book Breakdown

A ruthless tycoon

Savage ambition has brought common-born Rhys Winterborne vast wealth and success. In business and beyond, Rhys gets exactly what he wants. And from the moment he meets the shy, aristocratic Lady Helen Ravenel, he is determined to possess her. If he must take her virtue to ensure she marries him, so much the better…

Helen’s gentle upbringing belies a stubborn conviction that only she can tame her unruly husband. As Rhys’s enemies conspire against them, Helen must trust him with her darkest secret. The risks are unthinkable… the reward, a lifetime of incomparable bliss. And it all begins with…

Marrying Mr. Winterborne

Book Breakdown

This will probably be my favorite in the series. I'm calling it now. I loved every single thing about this one and wouldn't change any of it!

Helen is a shy and sweet girl that usually spends her time reading books. Which I think as bookworms we can relate to. She has this air about her and she's very selfless. I love her character!

Rhys is a tough Welsh man who owns the biggest department store in all of England, but high society shuns him because he's not one of them. When Devon offers Rhys Helen's hand, he's intrigued by the idea. With a Lady at his side and ties to a powerful family, doors will finally be open to him as long as Helen accepts him.

I rarely post gifs in my reviews but this one just fit. I can’t praise this book highly enough. The writing, the characters, everything about it, is flawless! This will probably be one of my favorite books of the year.

It has my favorite elements, a shy, selfless heroine and a rough around the edges man that will do anything for her. I really couldn’t ask for anything more.

Stepbrother Dearest - Book Breakdown

You’re not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a jerk he’d be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn’t want to be here.

I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.

But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. Then, things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Just as quickly as he’d come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I’d seen Elec. When tragedy struck our family, I’d have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

Book Breakdown

I read this book way past my bedtime and then after I got up, made breakfast for the family and took care of my daughter, I was back to reading it! I just couldn’t stop!

I was nervous to go into this novel because I thought it would be a bully romance but it’s not! It may seem like it but it was really a case of the guy picking on the girl just because he likes her but doesn’t want to like her. It all fades away quickly, and he no longer picks at her. Instead, he fights his growing feelings for her but it doesn’t matter, neither can fight the pull they feel for one another and the night before Elec has to go back to California, they share a night together.

They don’t see each other for seven years until Elec’s father passes away. He’s now got a girlfriend, but he can’t escape his feelings for Greta. They fight the pull the whole weekend but it just doesn’t work out and they end up together after a few more rough patches.

I have two issues with this book. The first is there is some cheating... Elec kisses Greta while still with his girlfriend. Yes, he was on his way to breakup with her, but Greta didn’t know that and it still doesn’t make it right.

The other issue is more of a personal gripe, the book ends with a baby. I’m so tired of romance novels ending with babies. Not everyone wants a child, and I feel like this troupe is getting shoved down my throat. Not a fan.

Something I really love about this book is that none of the conflict feels pointless. No stupid third act breakup that just makes no sense.

I really liked this novel and fully recommend it! Who doesn’t love a sexy pierced and tattooed hero?

Cold Hearted Rake (The Ravenals) - Mini Review

A twist of fate...

Devon Ravenel, London's most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities... and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl's three innocent sisters are still occupying the house... along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon's own.

A clash of wills...

Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:

Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she's ever known?

Book Breakdown

Everyone who reads Historical Romance always goes on and on about Lisa Kleypas and I wanted to know why. So I looked to see if my library had any copies available and the rest, as they say.... is history.

Kathleen just lost her husband of only three days. With no heir, everything falls to Devon, the new Earl. He intends to sell the place and kick everyone out. All that changes the more time he spends with Kathleen, he comes to want her and after falls in love with her. But how can she trust a rake that wanted to drop her and her sister-in-laws flat on their butts?

I really liked this book! An easy series to get into and watching Kathleen resist Devon just made me laugh at the antics they got into or swoon at how she could finally show emotion with him. It’s a sweet read with a wonderful happily ever after.

This book did something I’ve never seen before in a standalone series; it set up the next couple vividly and I will not lie, I can’t wait to read about them! I think I’ll like the next one even more!

Falling for the Highlander - Book Breakdown

Lady Murine Carmichael has known her share of bad luck. But when her debt-ridden half-brother tries to sell her off in exchange for a few Scottish horses, it’s the final straw. If keeping her freedom means escaping through harsh countryside alone, so be it. She has barely begun her journey when she lands an unlikely escort—the brawny Highlander who just refused to buy her virtue.

Dougall Buchanan was disgusted by Lord Danvries’ shameful offer, but Murine herself tempts him beyond measure. Even bedraggled and dusty, the lass glows with beauty and bravery. Dougall wants to do more than just help her flee. He wants to protect her—with his life and his heart—if she’ll only let him. For Murine may be pursued by a powerful foe, but nothing compares to the fiery courage of a Highlander in love.

Book Breakdown

Meh. I could sum up this entire book with that one word. It’s not a terrible book, but it’s nothing special. Murine lives with her half brother but when he offers her company in exchange for some horses... she runs away and comes across the group of men who turned down the offer her half brother made.

Yeah, I know...

Then the biggest part of this book is every single highlander just lusting after Murine and I do not know why. She’s kinda boring. She’s brave, but that’s about it. But eventually Dougall sets his sights on her and that’s it. There’s a murder mystery going on, but it’s so easy to figure out and doesn’t add much to the story.

It’s a cute book that I enjoyed reading but it was so easy to put down and come back to later and I didn’t think about it when I wasn’t reading it.

It’s well written and reads quickly. I loved reading the highlander way of talking, it’s something that used to take me forever to read but Outlander really helped me pick up speed and understanding with the dialogue.

Do I want to continue this series? Yes! I do. I just hope the others are better.

The Dating Dare by Jayci Lee

Tara Park doesn’t do serious relationships. Neither does she hop into bed with virtual strangers. Especially when that particular stranger is her best friend’s new brother-in-law. It isn’t an easy decision, though. Seth Kim is temptation personified. His unreasonably handsome looks and charming personality makes him easy on the eyes and good for her ego.

When a friendly game of Truth or Dare leads to an uncomplicated four-date arrangement with Seth, Tara can’t say she minds. But their dates, while sweet and sexy, have a tendency to hit roadblocks. Thankfully, their non-dates and chance meetings get frequent and heated.

Seth is leaving for a new job in Paris in a month and a no-strings attached fling seemed like a nice little distraction for both… But soon Seth realizes that Tara Park doesn’t come in a “nice & little” package--she’s funny and bold, sweet and sexy, and everything he ever wanted and never expected to find. Neither of them are ready for something serious and both have past relationship baggage they’ve been ignoring, but with a shot at forever on the line will they follow their hearts and take a chance on happily-ever-after?

Book Breakdown

Yes. Yes! YES!

I swear that Jayci Lee can do no wrong in my eyes! Everything she writes is just simply perfect and The Dating Dare is no different!

Seth and Tera are wonderful characters that had me cheering them on! I loved the game of Truth or Dare that started the whole thing. Sometime I love from this author is the diversity. I’ve read books where it felt so forced or like the author was checking a list. Not with Jayci Lee. Everything is organic and true, which makes it just that much sweeter.

This is a fun and cheesy read. Perfect if you’re feeling down or even a great beach read. I was so warm and fuzzy after reading this and I know you will be too!

DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS BOOK OR THIS AUTHOR!!!!

The Beast of Beswick - Book Breakdown

Beauty and the Beast meets Taming of the Shrew in this laugh-out-loud and heartfelt Regency romance.

Lord Nathaniel Harte, the disagreeable Duke of Beswick, spends his days smashing porcelain, antagonizing his servants, and snarling at anyone who gets too close. With a ruined face like his, it's hard to like much about the world. Especially smart-mouthed harpies—with lips better suited to kissing than speaking—who brave his castle with indecent proposals.

But Lady Astrid Everleigh will stop at nothing to see her younger sister safe from a notorious scoundrel, even if it means offering herself up on a silver platter to the forbidding Beast of Beswick himself. And by offer, she means what no highborn lady of sound and sensible mind would ever dream of—a tender of marriage with her as his bride.

Book Breakdown

Astrid is very protective of her younger sister and would do anything to make sure she has a proper season. When her aunt and uncle declare her sister is to be married to the man who ruined her, she heads over to the one place she thinks they’ll be safe: the beast of Beswick’s house.

Beswick fought in the war and survived but didn’t come back the same. He’s all scarred up. It’s the primary reason he hides from the world. But when Astrid and her younger sister show up, he doesn’t turn them away.

Astrid is not the normal girl for her time. She’s very outspoken about her thoughts and opinions and I love her for it. While I know it’s just not very realistic, it makes for a much better story to me. I don’t want to read about meek little girls who are just waiting for some guy to sweep them off their feet. I simply loved seeing Astrid take charge of her future and making sure her sister didn’t make the same mistake she did.

This was very much inspired by Beauty and the Beast. So while Beswick seems like a real jerk, underneath, he’s got a heart of gold and I loved watching these two slowly fall for one another.

It’s a quick read that just left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside and I need that right now.

June Wrap Up!

I read 15 books last month! That may not sound like a lot but that's the most I've read in nearly a year. I'm really proud of myself! So without further ado, let's get to all the books!

Music Monday - Carriage Ride Though the Forest

This meme is hosted over at Always Me

I hope all you Americans enjoyed the 4th. I couldn’t sleep till the fireworks ended. It triggers my PTSD. Plus, my Autistic daughter hates it too; it scares her. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about it for another year! I’ve been listening to these and reading lots of historical romance. I thought it fit with the tone nicely.

It Happened One Summer - NetGalley Book Breakdown

Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who is cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong.

Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar... in Washington.

Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.

Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

NetGalley Book Breakdown

I believe this is my first Tessa Bailey novel and I don’t know why I’ve not read her before! This was nearly perfection! I got my alpha hero and everything!

It’s funny as hell! Something I needed right now. I even loved the message of not having to change yourself for love. The writing is great, not a boring moment at all. My only gripe is Piper. I felt she could be shallow, and that’s not usually the type of character I like to read about, but I loved how her bubbly personality battled against Brendan and his moody butt.

There is some steam to this book for sure! Don’t let that sweet-looking cover fool you! I honestly thought this would be a more light steam book but man, am I glad I’m wrong! Because I just loved the sexiness so much!

Honestly, this was great, and I loved it!
